CBD For Anxiety, Stress & Depression: Tackle Blue Monday

Blue Monday is said to be the saddest day of the year due to a combination of bad weather, long nights and the lingering aftermath of an indulgent Christmas.

Add to this the continuation of the current pandemic, uncertainty over the new strain of COVID-19, and restrictive measures being placed upon where we go and who we see, all of the above can exacerbate feelings of anxiety, stress and depression.

Psychotherapist Noel McDermott told Sky News "There will already be mental health pressures from winter with Seasonal Affective Disorder, for example, and people are already worn down from the multiple issues they have to face from the ongoing pandemic.Long-term stress is a very serious problem and we have all been in a long term stress situation for the past year."

Some of us may be facing this current lockdown alone, without family or friends around us, or some may be surrounded by people who add to stress, worry and feelings of depression.
Remember you are not alone and it is always good to speak up if you are feeling low, whether that’s to someone you know, or someone who is trained in dealing with mental health issues.

If you’re looking for an organic and natural way to combat feelings of anxiety, stress or depression, that has been proven to positively affect mental wellbeing and is backed by scientists, CBD could be just what you need. Not sure what CBD is or want to know more? Take a read below and find out the benefits CBD has to offer in alleviating feelings of anxiety, stress and depression.

First things first, CBD doesn’t get you high. Although an essential component of medical marijuana, CBD is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of the marijuana plant.
CBD works directly with our Endocannabinoid System - a molecular system in the body responsible for regulating functions such as sleep, appetite, mood and pain. CBD empowers and increases our natural levels of endocannabinoids.
According to a report from the World Health Organisation, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

A doctor may prescribe pharmaceutical drugs to help combat or manage depression, yet many of these drugs can have equally difficult side-effects to manage, such as mood-swings, drowsiness and even sexual-dysfunction.

Research has shown that plant-based, natural, pure CBD may cause fewer side effects in some people than those who take over the counter pharmaceuticals. CBD may affect how our brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin in our system. Serotonin plays an important role in our mental wellbeing, mood and happiness. Low serotonin levels are commonly associated with people who have depression and in some cases not having enough serotonin may also cause anxiety.

A 2018 study published in Molecular Neurobiology concluded that CBD had promise as a fast-acting antidepressant. Whilst traditional antidepressant drugs typically take some time to begin working, research found that CBD showed rapid and sustained antidepressant-like effects.

Anxiety can happen from time to time, and is usually a normal healthy reaction that humans have developed as a protective mechanism. However, in these modern times, people are dealing with higher amounts of pressure in their day to day life, which can lead many to develop overwhelming feelings of both anxiety and stress. CBD has the ability to calm the mind and reduce these feelings of stress and anxiety.

A study conducted in 2011 researched the effects CBD had on people with SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Participants were given an oral dose of 400mg of CBD or a placebo. Those who received CBD experienced overall reduced anxiety levels.

Another study, published in Neuropsychoparmacology in 2011, determined that CBD may help alleviate social anxiety.
24 people with social anxiety disorder received either 600mg of CBD or a placebo an hour and a half before performing a simulated public speaking test. Additionally, 12 other people with social anxiety disorder performed the same test yet received no CBD treatment.
Results revealed that those that had taken CBD beforehand saw a significant reduction in their anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort whilst they were delivering their speech.

To conclude, even though we are still learning about the full effects CBD has to offer, what we can see is that CBD has continuously had a positive effect on study participants' mental well-being throughout the years. CBD is all natural, organic and plant-based and might be just the thing you need to help relieve stress, anxiety and depression.

Remember, when choosing the right CBD for you, make sure you do your research and are buying high quality, pure CBD. There are many brands out there using low-quality CBD extract that is not only ineffective, but can also be laden with dangerous chemicals, pesticides, herbicides and solvents.
Look for CBD products that have been Triple-Batch Tested, have less than 0.2% THC, the products you buy display the amount of CBD in them, and if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Here at Molecule we strive to bring the very best CBD products to our community as well as other natural health and well-being products. Take a look at our products and start your journey to a calmer, happier and healthier lifestyle.
